What is an M4R file?
The iPhone ringtone format: an AAC audio file with a .m4r extension, limited to 40 seconds (30 seconds for alert tones).
Pros
- The only ringtone format iPhones accept
Cons
- Maximum length of 40 seconds
How to open M4R files
VLC, foobar2000 and most music players open M4R. If your device won't play it, convert it to MP3.
Is M4R lossy or lossless?
M4R is lossy: it removes sounds that are hard to hear to make files smaller. Quality depends on the bitrate — 192 kbps and above is transparent for most listeners.
When should you convert M4R?
The iPhone ringtone format: an AAC audio file with a .m4r extension, limited to 40 seconds (30 seconds for alert tones). If the app or device you need doesn't accept M4R, convert it to MP3 — the most widely supported alternative.
