How to convert WebP to JPG

    3. Browser processing uses original files on your device. Public-link downloading is unavailable.

    What happens to your file

WebP files are common for website images, faster page loads, but not every app or device opens them. JPG works best for photos, web images, email attachments, printing. Spool converts WebP to JPG with FFmpeg and libheif/Pillow — real decoding and encoding, not a renamed file extension.

Convert and edit files on your device. The browser edition accepts up to 100 MB total, media up to 10 minutes and video up to 4K. Codec availability and device memory can limit individual jobs.

JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas become white.

Images saved from websites are often WebP. Spool converts WebP to JPG right in your browser using the built-in image decoder, so your images are never uploaded. Transparent areas are filled with white, because JPG has no transparency.

Converted in your browser, never uploaded

Convert and edit files on your device. The browser edition accepts up to 100 MB total, media up to 10 minutes and video up to 4K. Codec availability and device memory can limit individual jobs.

Why you keep getting WebP files

Google released WebP in 2010 to make web images smaller. Today most large websites and CDNs serve WebP to browsers that support it, so when you right-click "Save image as…", you often get a .webp even if the site uploaded a JPG or PNG. WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG, which is great for page speed and annoying when:

    • An upload form only accepts JPG or PNG (job portals, government sites, marketplaces).
    • An older version of Photoshop, Word, PowerPoint or a print shop's software won't open it.
    • A messaging app sends it as a document instead of showing it as a photo.

    What changes in the conversion

    WebP featureIn the JPG
Transparency (alpha)JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white
AnimationOnly the first frame is converted. For a moving result, use WebP to GIF
Lossless WebPBecomes a lossy JPG; at 88% or higher the difference isn't visible on photos
Metadata (EXIF, XMP)Not copied: the canvas only carries pixels
    DimensionsUnchanged, pixel for pixel

    Quality setting

The slider controls JPG compression from 30% to 100%; the default is 88%. Because the WebP was already compressed once, there's little point going far above that: 100% creates a much larger file without restoring detail the WebP removed. For product photos and printing, 92–95% is a good ceiling. For thumbnails or forms with tight size limits, 70–80% is usually fine.

Should you convert to JPG or PNG?

    • JPG for photos: people, products, landscapes. Smallest files, accepted everywhere.
    • PNG for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with transparency or sharp text. PNG is lossless, so files are bigger, but edges stay crisp and transparent areas stay transparent.

    Batch conversion

Drop up to 10 WebP files at once. Each converts locally in a few hundred milliseconds, and you can download them individually or all together. Because nothing is uploaded, there's no queue, even at busy times. Large batches use your device's memory; on older phones, convert a few at a time.

    Troubleshooting

    ProblemFix
White box around a logoThe WebP had transparency. Convert to PNG instead.
Animation stopped movingJPG can't animate. Use WebP to GIF.
JPG is bigger than the WebPNormal: JPG compresses less efficiently. Lower the quality slider, or compress the result.
File saved with a .jfif extensionThat's a JPG; rename it to .jpg if an app complains.
