When converting PNG to JPG makes sense
PNG is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly, which is perfect for graphics but inefficient for photographs. A photo saved as PNG is often 3–10 times larger than the same photo as a high-quality JPG. Convert to JPG when:
- A phone or app saved a photo as PNG and it's too large to email or upload.
- A website or form only accepts JPG, or has a size limit.
- You're putting many photos into a document or presentation and the file has become huge.
Keep PNG for logos, icons, screenshots with small text, diagrams, pixel art and anything that needs transparency. JPG's compression blurs sharp edges and creates faint "ringing" around text, and it can't store transparent pixels.
How it works
The conversion happens in your browser. The PNG is drawn onto an off-screen canvas over a white background and encoded as JPG at the quality you choose (88% by default). Nothing is uploaded, so confidential screenshots and documents stay on your device. Up to 10 files per batch; each takes well under a second on a modern phone or computer.
Transparency becomes white
JPG has no alpha channel. Every transparent or semi-transparent pixel is blended onto white, which is what you want for documents, product photos on white and most forms. If your image is a logo meant to sit on a coloured background, don't convert it to JPG. Use PNG to WebP (which keeps transparency and is much smaller) or keep the PNG.
Picking a quality
| Content | Suggested quality | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Photos | 80–90% | Invisible difference, a fraction of the PNG size |
| Screenshots with text you must convert | 92–100% | Reduces blur and halos around letters |
| Images for printing | 92–95% | Keeps fine detail at print resolution |
| Thumbnails, previews | 65–80% | Small files; artefacts aren't noticeable at small sizes |
Need a specific file size instead, like "under 200 KB"? Convert here, then use Compress image with a maximum size in KB. It searches for the highest quality that fits.
Size: what to expect
Convert and edit files on your device. The browser edition accepts up to 100 MB total, media up to 10 minutes and video up to 4K. Codec availability and device memory can limit individual jobs.
Other details
- Dimensions stay exactly the same. To make the image smaller in pixels too, use Resize image.
- Animated PNG (APNG): only the first frame is converted.
- Metadata: text chunks and colour-profile tags aren't copied into the JPG.
- Going the other way? JPG to PNG won't restore lost detail, but gives you a lossless copy for editing.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Text looks fuzzy | Raise quality to 95–100%, or keep the image as PNG. |
| Logo has a white box around it | Expected: JPG has no transparency. Use PNG or WebP. |
| JPG isn't smaller | The PNG is a simple graphic. Keep it as PNG and compress it instead. |
| Need several images in one file | Use PNG to PDF. |
