What is an MPEG MPEG file?
The format behind DVDs and digital broadcast television. Useful for DVD authoring software and broadcast-era equipment.
Pros
- Accepted by DVD authoring tools
- Very fast to decode on old hardware
Cons
- Files are much larger than MP4 at the same quality
How to open MPEG files
VLC Media Player (free, Windows/macOS/Linux/Android/iOS) opens MPEG files with almost any codec. If a specific app won't open it, convert it to MP4.
Is MPEG lossy or lossless?
MPEG is a container, not a codec — whether it is lossy depends on the streams inside (MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio). In practice almost all MPEG files use lossy compression.
When should you convert MPEG?
Useful for DVD authoring software and broadcast-era equipment. If the app or device you need doesn't accept MPEG, convert it to MP4 — the most widely supported alternative.
