What is an Opus file?

The most efficient modern audio codec, used by WhatsApp voice notes, Discord, Zoom and YouTube. Excellent quality even at 64 kbps.

Pros

  • Best quality per kilobyte of any lossy codec
  • Great for speech and music

Cons

  • Older devices and car stereos may not play it

How to open Opus files

VLC, foobar2000 and most music players open Opus. If your device won't play it, convert it to MP3.

Is Opus lossy or lossless?

Opus is lossy: it removes sounds that are hard to hear to make files smaller. Quality depends on the bitrate — 192 kbps and above is transparent for most listeners.

When should you convert Opus?

Excellent quality even at 64 kbps. If the app or device you need doesn't accept Opus, convert it to MP3 — the most widely supported alternative.
